So mr.Die-Trying I talked it over with some family members and this is what they had to say about this
“ You should go over and take a look , even if you can’t afford it you’ll at least get to look a neat little car”
“ There are 911's that old? Neat.”
“ No, too rare it’s out of your depth, let someone more experienced handle this one. Maybe if were a 240Z or Nova or a Mustang or something. Don’t bother.”

at some point, you get to “THE POINT” where you are able to tell your folks......... “with OR without your approval, i’m doing this”........ “be nicer with your support, BUT I AM DOING THIS”............

its just up to you to decide whats worth fighting for.........

I mean if it doesn’t have a engine or it’s been crashed and poorly repaired, I won’t go for it. If it’s in somewhat good condition I might tinker with it and maybe sell it for a bit more than what I may get if for. If it’s missing papers I’m not touching it.

If I ever saw a project 911 or 912 that looked like maybe I could make an offer on it, I wouldn’t sleep until I knew the outcome.
Reminds me when I was exchanging some emails of interest in an MG MGB GT with a guy(asking price was like $2,000) and he mentions a 911 project he is going to be selling as well sometime that would interest me. Now, I contacted the guy over a $2,000 so I assume he knows, I’m not exactly balling. And so I ask what he’s thinking about getting for the 911, wait a day and a half and... $20k. Well crap.

Wow, that last family member clearly doesn’t know old cars. 911s have absurdly simple VW derived flat engines, and are probably easier than a 240Z to restore. Just because it’s rare doesn’t mean it’s difficult.

The way I see it, if it is a 912 and the engine needs urgent attention you would end up spending more to get it fixed properly than if it were a 911. If it is a 911 you can always put in a second hand 911 engine in reasonable condition to drive it around.
I understand working, not-too bad second hand 911 engines can still be had relatively cheaply?
(Of course you can also fit a 911 engine to a 912 to drive around, just be prepared for the cost of restoring the 912 engine...)
Just be careful about the condition of the general structure. 911s and 912s of that vintage were not exactly well protected against rust (in particular the bodies by Karmann, if I remember correctly). In particular, if the area around the rear torsion bars is bad, it may not be the car for you. Fixable, but very expensive to do.
Start looking at online buying guides for air cooled 911s. Now.

Aside from the VIN or parts, these in this condition are best left to be viewed as unique / eclectic works of yard art...relentlessly enticing you with the potential of automotive glory, yet being wildly prohibitive in the cost to resurrect / achieve it.

Per se the lawnmower is unimportant. The idea is to give the impression you are doing the seller a favour. The moral of the story is: if you want a good but cheap 911 you have to be ruthless.

Yeah. Around 1986, when I was a very young and rather impecunious University student I found a man who had a Giulia stepnose (1.6, Veloce) in slightly better condition that this car. Parked on the street. It was already getting vandalised (badges etc). He wanted more or less the equivalent 500 dollars (in today’s money). I did not know what to do. I was 20 and did not even have a driving licence yet.
I enlisted the help of my sister’s boyfriend, an engineer in his 30s who was madly in love with Citroën 2CVs. Don’t get me wrong, I love Citroën twins myself, but sometimes their owners hate bigger/higher performance cars with a passion.
He actively discouraged me from buying it.
I now understand there was an element of jealousy in the whole situation. Why should I be able some day to drive a 60s Italian sporty coupé, while he was still driving around in an 80s 2CV?
Six months later the owner was desperate and lowered the price to, say, 300 bucks and stupidly I passed.
Never again...

That’s the only thing I’d be concerned with in regards to a pre-galvanized car. To my knowledge, the ‘63-73 cars aren’t too far off from the ‘74-77 cars I’m use to in terms of differences and similarities. You’ll be working with carburetors if you acquire this car. Much easier to tune than K-Jetronic I imagine.

Unless you
really
buy at an outrageous price what amounts to a worthless pile of rust only held together by paint and trim, it is quite likely that in the future you will be able to put the whole transaction into perspective and realise that ultimately it was a good thing. Don’t be stupid, but be brave.
In any case (even if you but just a pile of worthless rust) bear in mind that humans do tend to regret more what they didn’t do than what they actually did.
And regret can gnaw at your soul for decades.

Just beware of terminal rot, it might be parked for a reason. Cars don’t often age well with grass growing under them. Could be a labor of love even if it has some holes, anyway.
I “found” an early 912 last weekend too, parked on the street, but I doubt it was abandoned or for sale for 5K :)
By the time I could get back to it in the fintail for a pic, it was gone.

See how the back wheels are canted in at the bottom and there looks to be a big tire gap, there’s no engine and tranny in that poor thing. The front also looks collapsed and at the very least is missing it’s headlights. That was likely a parts car for some other project if I were to wage a guess.
I don’t want to squash ANYONE’S dreams but with the prices for even 912's with a long nose that hulk is going to cost a bundle. Sitting there in plain view that long says he probably thinks it’s worth even more than it is.
Approach him, but do it cautiously without expectations

You know, I had to check as yes you are right there ARE 4 bolts and the diameter of the bell housing is the same. Apparently it will bolt up but you have to do a careful dance of flywheel/clutch/throwout/starter mods/selection.
In my experience there were SO MANY small and large differences between VW flat 4s and the Porsche flat 6's that it was all relatable but all slightly different. Same tree, different branches.
Die-Trying
> KeedyT
09/19/2016 at 10:25 | 0 |
i can see how enough of those differences in the flywheel, clutch area could make things interesting........
it would be a backwards swap for sure,(vw 4 into porsche) but my thinking was that if the original engine was not usable(available), that the guy(s65) could round up an INEXPENSIVE(vw bug) engine, and have something to cruise up the block in..........
i always enjoy getting to talk to you guys that know your stuff on specific makes......... you are at least able to tell me WHY things are bad ideas......

Your theory and point is well taken, but since you were curious.... it’s likely the 901 tranny is missing too and there is absolutely not a simple bolt up of the whole beetle drive-train. And while the VW motor might bolt up if there was one there getting it to function because of a whole host of issues would be a hassle.
Then :D - after you went to all the trouble of a “swap” (which has been done millions of times but is never cheap or easy) you end up with a bad ass 40 hp pushing around a once diginfied something.... so if one is entertaining “swap” you might as well go to all the trouble of putting in something with moar powah (subie, cheby, wankle, electric, hamsters)
